| These surfactants are amongst the most commonly used non-ionic surfactants due to the ability to synthesize a wide range of different characteristics. They are synthesized by reacting a fatty alcohol (can be natural or synthetic) with ethylene oxide. The resulting molecules produced contain a hydrophobic tail (fatty alcohol) and a hydrophilic head (ethylene oxide). Depending on the amount of ethylene oxide present, and the chain length and structure of the fatty alcohol, varying degrees of hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity can be created. These surfactants are used extensively in the household and industrial cleaning industry, especially in laundry detergents, dishwashing products, and hard surface cleaning. They also find industrial applications as surface wetting agents, emulsifiers, and degreasers. | ||||||
